Linklaters Named Strongest U.K. Law Firm Brand

Posted by Chris Johnson

Linklaters has the strongest brand of any U.K. law firm, according to an independently researched report published Tuesday.

The Magic Circle firm placed 175th on this year’s Superbrands list of the country’s top 500 business brands, which the market research company compiles based on the opinions of marketing experts, business professionals, and thousands of British consumers.

In usurping rival Clifford Chance as the highest-placed law firm, Linklaters rose 13 places from its spot on last year’s Superbrands list. Five other U.K. firms wound up in the top 500, including national U.K. firm Eversheds—which retained its position as the third-strongest law firm brand, despite falling 58 places to 258th—and Allen Overy, which saw its rank improve by a sector-topping 62 places.

In what was a generally disappointing year for law firms, Hogan Lovells, Norton Rose, Pinsent Masons, Simmons Simmons and Lewis Silkin all fell off the brand arbiter’s rankings after cracking the list last year. Herbert Smith regained its place, however.

Its improved showing notwithstanding, Linklaters was still soundly beaten by U.K. regulator The Law Society, which was named the country’s sixty-ninth strongest business brand.

The overall business ranking was once again topped by FTSE-100 engineering company Rolls-Royce Group plc. Internet search giant Google Inc., pharmaceutical leader GlaxoSmithKline plc, consumer electronics company Apple Inc., and British Airways Plc rounded out the top five.
