Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Winston-Salem is a city in North Carolina, United States. With a 2015 estimate of 241,218 people, Winston-Salem is the fifth largest city in the state. An interesting fact: Winston-Salem is home to the tallest office building in the region, 100 North Main Street, formerly the Wachovia Building and now known locally as the Wells Fargo Center. In 2012, Winston-Salem was listed among the 10 best places to retire in the U.S. by CBS MoneyWatch. On January 6, 1766, the first tree was felled for the building of Salem (named after the Canaanite city mentioned in the Book of Genesis). Salem was a typical Moravian settlement congregation with the public buildings of the congregation grouped around a central square, today Salem Square. Salem officially became a town in December 1856. In 1849, the Salem congregation sold land north of Salem to the newly formed Forsyth County for a county seat. The new town was called “the county town” or Salem until 1851 when it was named Winston for a local hero of the Revolutionary War, Joseph Winston.
Although traditionally associated with the textile and tobacco industries, Winston-Salem is transforming itself to be a leader in the nanotech, high-tech, and bio-tech fields. Medical research is a fast-growing local industry, and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is the largest employer in Winston-Salem. Old Salem Museums & Gardens on Old Salem Road is a great place to enjoy a little history and the pleasant scenery of a quaint old town. They even have cobblestone paths. You are able to tour the buildings and get a lot of interaction with the employees in the ones you go into. Plus they have a fabulous bakery. Their oatmeal and chocolate chip cream pies are wonderful, a is their famous sugar cake. A complete walk around the town takes about 3 hours.
The Reynolda House Museum of American Art is another worthwhile stop in Winston-Salem. Located on Reynolda Road it is an interesting place to tour. At present there is an exhibit on Ansel Adams which you can view before taking a relaxing stroll through the adjoining gardens. Perhaps you’d like to stop for a nice lunch at the Village Tavern, then finish up with a tour of the Reynolds house. This is a beautifully restored home with interesting American art exhibits. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The Tavern in Old Salem on S Main Street has wonderful food and equally wonderful service.
The bread and roll basket which comes with apple and whipped honey butter is highly recommended, as is the bratwurst, club sandwich, quiche and salad. The staff is pleasant and helpful in recommending what dishes to order. Give it a try and you won’t be disappointed. Sweet Potatoes on N Trade Street is a fun, convivial place to go for some southern style food. This place is bursting at the seams with Southern Hospitality and fabulous food. The cornbread with a glass of buttermilk, fried chicken livers, shrimp and grits, and lemon chess pie are all delicious. The changing menu is full of tasty superb southern comfort food.
