The largest city in the State of Kansas in Wichita and it is the 49th-largest in the United States. Wichita is located in south central Kansas on the Arkansas River. Wichita is the county seat of Sedgwick County. It is also the principal city of Wichita metropolitan area. The population of the city as of 2010 in United States Census was 382,368 and as of 2014, it was estimated to have increased to 388,413. In 2014, the estimated population of the Wichita metropolitan area was 641,076, and that of the larger Wichita-Winfield combined statistical area was 673,598. In 1860s, Wichita began as a trading post on Chisholm Trail and was incorporated in 1870. Wichita earned the name “Cowtown” because it became the key destination for cattle accessing the railroads. The city was transformed into a hub of United States aircraft production and became known as “The Air Capital of the World”. Wichita also became an area of culture, media, and trade. It hosts several large museums, theatres, parks, and entertainment venues, notably Intrust Bank Arena.
The City of Wichita maintains a number of Citizen Advisory Boards and Commissions. The purpose of these groups is to pay specialized attention to certain areas affecting our community and to make recommendations to better inform City Council decisions. These groups range from Library operations, to urban planning, to Park activities, and more. There are also six District Advisory Boards which make recommendations to City Council and City staff on a number of wide ranging issues. The mission of the City Council is to provide policy direction for the City of Wichita in developing, implementing, and maintaining services to the citizens of Wichita.
The Council establishes policy direction for the City by enacting ordinances, laws, policies, adopting the budget, levying taxes, and appointing members to citizen advisory boards and commissions. The seven-member Council is elected to four-year terms on a nonpartisan basis with staggered terms of office. The Mayor and City Council Members can run two consecutive four year terms. The Mayor’s position is full-time, while Council Members are part-time. Salaries and election years vary per year. Six Council members are elected by district, and the Mayor is elected at-large. The general election for Mayor and Council is set by statute and charter ordinance as the first Tuesday in April of each odd numbered year. The election date changes according to the calendar. The Wichita Art Museum is the largest art museum in the state of Kansas and contains 7,000 works in permanent collections. The Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University is a modern and contemporary art museum with over 6,300 works in its permanent collection. The Music Theatre of Wichita, Wichita Grand Opera, and Wichita Symphony Orchestra perform regularly at the Century II Convention Hall downtown. The Orpheum Theatre, built in 1922, serves as a downtown venue for smaller shows.
