As of July 1, 2014, according to the Census Bureau, the population of Stamford had risen to 128,278, making it the third largest city in the state. Approximately 30 miles from Manhattan, Stamford is in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Metro area which is a part of the Greater New York metropolitan area. The mission of the City of Stamford’s Recycling & Sanitation Division is the clean and efficient recycling and garbage collection for households, municipal properties and schools. Our goal is to improve Stamford‘s recycling rate through providing support and information for the Stamford’s Curbside Recycling Program, Katrina Mygatt Recycling Center, and Hazardous Waste Collection Days. Stamford Recycling and Sanitation provides staffing and manages the Katrina Mygatt Recycling Center, The Scale House, Collections Department and Hazardous Waste Collection Days. Last year, by diverting waste into recycling, Stamford recycled over 12,000 tons of material (rather than incinerating or putting in a landfill), which resulted in cost savings of over $800,000 from waste hauling, and generating over $263,000 in revenue from the sale of recycling commodities. We are continuing to divert recyclables out of the total waste stream, resulting in a 40% diversion rate last fiscal year which includes single stream recycling and compostable waste.
Fire protection in Stamford of Stamford is provided by the paid Stamford Fire Rescue Department (SFRD) and 5 all-volunteer Fire Departments: Glenbrook-New Hope, Belltown, Springdale, Turn of River, and Long Ridge. The Stamford Fire Rescue Department operates out of 7 Fire Stations (including 2 Substations) and share quarters with 2 volunteer fire departments (Glenbrook-New Hope and Springdale). The SFRD’s primary response district includes the southern, more urban sections of the city, including Downtown, East Side, West Side, Woodside, and South End areas of Stamford. The 5 all-volunteer fire departments’ primary response districts include the Northern, more residential sections of Stamford, from Downtown to the New York State border. The SFRD’s 290 paid members staff a total of 9 Engines (including 2 Quints), 3 Trucks, 1 Heavy Rescue, and a Deputy Chief’s Command Vehicle. The Stamford Fire Rescue Department responds to over 11,000 emergency calls annually. The 5 all-volunteer fire departments each operate 1 to 2 Fire Stations in their own tax districts. The volunteers man a combined apparatus fleet of 14 Engines, 3 Trucks, 5 Rescues, and their own Command Vehicles, as many other special units and respond to all calls in their respected districts in conjunction with the paid fire department.

Every residence, every business (including non-profits), and all public and private agencies and institutions such as colleges, hospitals, and local and state government agencies, must recycle. The items required to be recycled in accordance with Section 22a-208v and Section 22a-256a of the Connecticut General Statutes and Section 22a-241b of the Regulations of the Connecticut State Agencies include: Glass & Metal Food and Beverage Containers, Corrugated Cardboard, Newspaper, White Office Paper (Residences exempt), Scrap Metal, Ni-Cd Rechargeable Batteries (From electronics), Waste Oil, Lead Acid Batteries (From vehicles), and Leaves (Must be composted).
