St. Paul, Minnesota

The second largest city in Minnesota, St. Paul is also the state capital. The growth of St. Paul was inspired by the nearness of Fort Snelling, the first major United States military presence in the area, and by its location on the Upper Mississippi River, with the northernmost natural navigable port on the vast river. In 1841, the settlement received its name of Saint Paul from Father Lucien Galtier a priest from France, in honor of Paul the Apostle. Saint Paul’s historic Landmark Center was built in 1902 and originally served as the Federal Court House and Post Office for the Upper Midwest. St. Paul still stands today in Rice Park, having withstood the passage of time and evolved into an arts and culture center for Saint Paul. The West Side of St. Paul continues to house third and fourth-generation Mexican immigrants, along with 21st century first-generation Mexican immigrants. As of 2004, almost 10% of St. Paul’s population were recent Hmong immigrants from Vietam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar.

St. Paul is still a financial center with the headquarters for The Travelers Companies. Many of the large buildings in Lowertown, such as the Commerce Building and the Finch, Vaslyck, and McConville Dry Goods Company Building are residential condominiums and apartments. Saint Paul’s Xcel Center was selected to host the Republican National Convention in 2008. Regardless of whether or not you’re religious, if you are visiting St. Paul, a visit to the Cathedral of St. Paul is highly recommended. The church is located on Selby Ave, and well worth the trip. This is a beautiful place to see and worship in, with lovely architecture, and history buffs will be in heaven. There are tons of history in this cathedral.

A fantastic experience for the whole family is the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, located on Estabrook Dr. in St. Paul, it’s actually right in historic Como Park. There are giraffes, zebras, polar bears, penguins, and their wonderful California sea lion exhibit. It’s really a great place to go to spend the day with your family. There are may picnic areas so you can bring lunch, and the park area has many rides small children will enjoy. After a long day of sightseeing, you’re probably feeling hungry and tired. The St. Paul Grill, located on Market Street, will take care of your appetite just fine. There’s usually no trouble getting a table and the food is excellent, but that’s what you have a right to expect from a restaurant with a great reputation and elegant atmosphere such as this one. The location is good too, but you can be sure that you will be spending a lot.

The Meritage in St. Paul is also a great restaurant located on St. Peter Street. No matter how many times you dine there, the service and food will not disappoint you. They have excellent oysters, escargot, white asparagus soup, rabbit, duck, mussels, and eggs with asparagus and caviar. The staff is attentive and well versed in the intricacies of the menu, and the prices are reasonable.
