St. Louis, Missouri

The St. Louis area was first settled by Native American mound builders who lived as part of the Mississippian culture from the 9th century to the 15th century, followed by other migrating tribes. In the late 17th century, French explorers arrived to St. Louis. Spain took over in 1763 and a trading company led by Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau established the settlement of St. Louis in February 1764. St. Louis became part of the U.S. through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. St. Louis became an independent city in 1876. With its connection through the Ohio River to the east, the Mississippi to the south and north, and the Missouri to the west, St. Louis was perfectly situated to become the main base of interregional trade. In the 1840s, St. Louis became a destination for massive immigration by Irish and Germans.

After World War II in St. Louis, federal highway subsidies and postwar development encouraged outward migration as residents moved to gain newer housing in the suburbs. This greatly lowered St. Louis’ middle-class population. Starting in the 1980s and continuing on to the present, construction and gentrification have increased in some areas of St. Louis, especially downtown. The city saw modest population growth during the mid-2000s, but showed a decline in the 2010 U.S. Census. St. Louis’ population is listed at 318,416 as of 2013.

The Missouri Botanical Gardens, located on Shaw St in St. Louis, will please nature lovers. For families this is an ideal way to pass the day. The sculpture gardens are spectacular, Japanese garden is a model of serenity, and there’s an opportunity for children to feed the koi. It’s really beautiful all around, with a great gift shop too. Another family pleaser is the St. Louis Zoo on Government Drive. It’s a surprisingly large zoo with many animals. They offer a tram ride all around the zoo, a fantastic Sea Lion show, polar bears, elephants and hippos too. Grizzly bears are going to be arriving in 2017.

St. Louis’ Bogart’s Smokehouse on S 9th Street, (Soulard area) isn’t big, but the food is fabulous. Get ready to chow down! The meats, including the ribs, pulled pork, burnt ends, and brisket were all juicy and tasty. They have a truly wonderful pineapple express BBQ sauce, and their cole slaw is to die for. A casual atmosphere pervades and the staff is friendly and helpful with the menu. You can have a really enjoyable experience here and for a reasonable price. If you’re into seafood, then make the Broadway Oyster Bar your first stop in St. Louis. Located on S. Broadway, they have a fun, casual atmosphere with great music to listen to and a pleasant rustic look. The staff is pleasant and knowledgeable, willing to help with the numerous selections if you can’t make up your mind. The Jambalaya, red beans and rich and crawfish etouffee was delicious, and their oysters are the best. Drinks are great with a wide array to choose from. Word of caution, don’t order a bucket of crawfish unless you’re in the mood to do some serious peeling.
