The third largest city in Missouri, Springfield’s population was 159,498 as of the 2010 census. Springfield’s nickname is the “Queen City of the Ozarks” and it is known as the “Birthplace of Route 66”. Springfield also has several universities including Missouri State University, Drury University, and Evangel University. Springfield was founded in 1830. Where exactly the name Springfield comes is unclear; however, the most common belief is that the city was named for Springfield, Massachusetts. One story says that a certain James Wilson, who lived in the then unnamed city, offered free whiskey to any who would vote to name it after his home town of Springfield, Massachusetts. But in 1883, the historian R. I. Holcombe wrote something different, “The town took its name from the circumstance of there being a spring under the hill, on the creek, while on top of the hill, where the principal portion of the town lay, there was a field.”
On July 21, 1865, Springfield entered the Wild West era when the town square was the scene of the Wild Bill Hickok–Davis Tutt shootout, a “quick draw” duel between Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt. The Springfield Conservation Nature Center is a natural habitat that all can enjoy. Located at S. Nature Center Way in Springfield, it has lots of trails to hike and a large deer population which make appearances that delight adults and children alike. It has some great views and Springfield Lake is near by as well. If you’re very still you just might even spot a chipmunk or two!
