South Bend, Indiana

South Bend is the county seat of St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States, on the St. Joseph River near its southernmost bend, from which it derives its name. As of the 2010 census, South Bend city had a total of 101,168 residents; its Metropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 318,586 and Combined Statistical Area of 721,296. South Bend is the fourth-largest city in Indiana, serving as the economic and cultural hub of Northern Indiana. The highly ranked University of Notre Dame is located just to the north in unincorporated Notre Dame, Indiana and is an integral contributor to the region’s economy. Recently, the city population has started to grow for the first time in nearly fifty years. The old Studebaker plant and surrounding area, now called Ignition Park, is being redeveloped as a technology center to attract new industry. South Bend has also been featured in national news coverage for Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who has achieved recognition for his various economic development projects within the city, his position as the youngest mayor to be elected in a city of more than 100,000 residents, and his essay in which he came out as the first openly gay executive in the state of Indiana.

The most significant event in South Bend’s history was the arrival of Father Edward Sorin, the founder of the University of Notre Dame, who reached the future site of the university on November 26, 1842, with seven Brothers of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Bishop Hailandiere of the diocese of Vincennes had given Father Sorin 600 acres to found a college for seminary and secular students as well as to start a mission for the Potawatomi Native Americans. The college’s first student was Alexis Coquillard. Enrolment picked up with the arrival of the Lake Shore Railroad in 1851. A fire destroyed the campus in 1879, and the Neo-Gothic Administration Building, with its golden dome topped by a figure of the Virgin Mary, was opened later that year. The golden dome, a tradition of academic excellence, and winning football teams have become familiar symbols of this famous university, which remains a significant part of life in South Bend in the twenty-first century.

South Bend owes its vibrancy and charm to its neighborhoods, as diverse as they are numerous. The local housing stock is so appealing that it often is a decisive factor for professionals choosing employment in South Bend versus other cities where real estate is much more expensive. When the NBC Today Show’s list of top 10 cities nationwide with the best housing values came out, South Bend was number 1. In addition, South Bend’s West Washington Street area was listed among This Old House’s ‘2012 Best Places to Live.’

Located in the heart of downtown South Bend, has the “HOTTEST Tickets in Town” for Pop, Rock, Country, Christian and Symphony concerts as well as national touring Broadway shows and comedians which is the Morris Performing Arts Center, The Morris is home to Broadway Theatre League of South Bend, Inc., South Bend Symphony Orchestra, and Southold Dance Theater. They also have a public library named St. Joseph County Public Library which ranked among the top ten libraries in the US for cities with a population of 100,000 – 250,000; SJCPL was the first library in the US on the World Wide Web and second in the world. It features over 50 public Internet stations.
