Your Connector & Legal Recruiting Solution
Rockville is a city situated in the central area of Montgomery County, Maryland. As of the 2010 census, Rockville’s population was 61,209, making it the third largest incorporated city in Maryland, after Baltimore and Frederick. Interestingly, Rockville, together with nearby Gaithersburg and Bethesda, is at the center of the Interstate 270 Technology Corridor which is home to numerous software and biotechnology companies and several federal government institutions. Rockville also contains several upscale shopping centers and is considered one of the major retail hubs in Montgomery County.
Located in the Piedmont region and crossed by three creeks, Rockville gave ideal refuge to semi-Nomadic Native Americans as early as 8000 B.C. By 1700, under pressure from European colonists, most of the original inhabitants had been driven away. In the 18th century the first land patents in the Rockville area were obtained by Arthur Nelson between 1717 and 1735. Within three decades, the first permanent buildings in what would become the center of Rockville were built on this land. On July 16, 1803, the area was officially entered into the county land records with the name “Rockville,” derived from Rock Creek. In 1873, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad arrived, making Rockville easily accessible from Washington, D.C.
The mid-20th century saw substantial growth in Rockville, which added hundreds of new homes and thousands of new residents to the city. Rockville is closely linked to the neighboring towns of Kensington and North Bethesda. The Music Center at Strathmore, an arts and theater center, opened in February 2005 in North Bethesda and is currently the second home of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Fitzgerald Theater in Rockville Civic Center Park has provided diverse entertainment since 1960. In 1998, Regal Cinemas opened in Town Center.
The city also has a British style brass band. Located near the Montgomery County Historical Society, less than a mile from Rockville itself, Rockville Town Square is a fun place to go and just hang out for the evening. It boasts some truly great and unique restaurants, such as Spice X-ing, David Chang, and some good Peruvian and Middle Eastern food as well. There are also plenty of food chains and some fabulous independent restaurants which are situated on the periphery, but outside the “square”. There is a fun toy store, and a great local organic food market, but most of the shopping choices are still pretty limited.
If you fancy Italian food, Il Pizzico, located on Frederick Road in Rockville is a fantastic Italian restaurant. Hidden away in Rockville, this little gem waiting to be discovered is a pleasant surprise. If you want to start off with something cool, you can begin with the Insalata Di Mare, a cold steamed seafood salad. Two of the best dishes you should try are the Scaloppine Alla Sandra, in which the veal, which was exquisitely tender, ad the sliced steak special. This was presented on a wooden board with an unusual and tasty green sauce. The staff was wonderful, very attentive and sociable. Then there’s Clyde’s Tower Oaks Lodge in Rockville. Quite unusual in appearance, this restaurant is located on Preserve Pkwy, and provides great American food in a cozy, woodsy atmosphere. There are two bars, complimentary valet parking, and the food is definitely worth the visit. There is even a nice brunch menu available on Sundays.
