Reston, Virginia—the First Planned Residential Community

Reston is a census-designated place located in Northern Virginia’s Fairfax County, about 20 miles north of Washington D.C. Containing four artificial lakes (among which Lake Anne and Lake Thoreau are the most famous), the town encompasses a total area of 17.4 square miles. According to the 2010 census, Reston’s population is 56,407 residents. Founded in 1964, modern Reston is internationally known as the first planned residential community.

Reston’s history began in 1649, when King Charles II of England assigned vast areas of land in Northern Virginia to seven of his supporters. During the 18th century, Lord Fairfax—the descendant of the original land owners—decided to auction it off for $5 per acre. In 1886, the property which later became Reston was bought by William Dunn and Dr. Carl Wiehle. For several years, Dr. Wiehle drafted plans for what he imagined to become a Utopian new city. In 1897, he even incorporated a town with his own name. Although Wiehle died soon after the construction of the first buildings and the Utopian project was abandoned, some 80 years later his ideas did catch on in 20th century Reston.

Reston’s foundation was the result of the idealist vision of Robert E. Simon, a Harvard graduate and real-estate entrepreneur who intended to create a city that would meet all the requirements of happy living. With the profit he made from the sale of Carnegie Hall (a family property), Simon purchased 6,750 acres of land in Fairfax County, determined to establish a self-contained community where people could live, work, learn and play without driving long distances. The name Reston was derived from his initials and the word “ town” . Primarily focusing on the quality of life, not only did Simon insist on walkability, density, access to green spaces and recreational facilities, but he also underlined the importance of racial equality, religious and cultural diversity, as well as availability for people with different levels of income. Although in 1967 Simon decided to leave, the latter results have been impressive: envisioned as a series of dense village centers, Reston grew into a thriving open-space urban community.

Reston prides itself on being the city with one of the most successful high school graduation rates in Virginia (20 percent above the state average) and a median household income of $105,775 (73 percent higher than the rest of Virginia). With numerous foot pathways, bike paths, bridges and tunnels, Reston is truly a haven for pedestrians. After the Metro opened a Silver Line in 2014, cars almost became an unnecessary item for the residents of Reston. On top of its pedestrian friendliness and traffic safety, Reston is a place filled with parks, wildflower meadows and wooded areas. With recreational spaces of more than fifteen hundred acres (including golf courses, public pools, bridle paths, and tennis courts), 23 educational institutions of all levels and a state-of-the-art medical complex, it’s no wonder that CNN Money Magazine ranked Reston as the 7th best place to live in America.
