The capital and largest city of the United State of Arizona is Phoenix. Phoenix is the sixth largest most populous city nationwide and the most populous state capital in the United States. With 1,445,632 people as of the 2010 United States Census. Phoenix is the only state capital with a population of more than 1 million residents. Phoenix as the anchor of the Phoenix metropolitan area is also known as the Valley of the Sun. The city is the 13th largest metro area by population in the United States, with approximately 4.3 million people in 2010. In addition, Phoenix is the county seat of Maricopa County and is one of the largest cities in the United States by land area.

Phoenix became the capital of the newly formed state of Arizona on February 14, 1912 under President William Howard Taft. In 1913, Phoenix adopted a new form of government, changing from mayor-council system to council-manager. Phoenix is the first one in the United States to adopt this form of city government. In 1920 Phoenix would see its first skyscraper, the Heard Building. In 1929 Sky Harbor was officially opened, at the time owned by Scenic Airways. It would later be purchased by the city in 1935, which operates it to this day.

Phoenix’s Arizona Broadway Theatre, Arizona’s one-of-a-kind, award-winning, state-of-the-art, professional dinner theatre showcases locally and nationally acclaimed artists both onstage and behind the scenes. Full service dining, a full bar and Broadway-style shows are available eight times a week. ABT’s luxurious auditorium comfortably accommodates 400 guests with unobstructed views from every seat. The VIP balcony seats an additional 44 with tables for two and four. The theatre offers a number of performances year-round with a variety of prices and times to fit every lifestyle. Gracious wait staff serves gourmet selections two hours prior to each show. The theatre facilitates luncheons, meetings, parties, and special events in its private banquet room, expansive lobby or auditorium.

There’s almost always a game happening in Phoenix. The city fields teams in all four major professional sports leagues: The NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, NBA’s Phoenix Suns, MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks and NHL’sArizona Coyotes. Downtown’s Talking Stick Resort Arena (formerly US Airways Center) is also home to the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and the Arena Football League’s Arizona Rattlers. Phoenix has an arena football team, the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League. Their games are also played at Talking Stick Resort Arena. They won their first of five AFL championships in 1994; in 2014 they won their third championship in a row. The city is also host to several major professional golf events, including the LPGA’s Founder’s Cup and, since 1932, The Phoenix Open of the PGA. The Phoenix Marathon is a new addition to the Phoenix’s sports scene, and is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series has held an event in Phoenix every January since 2004.
