New Orleans, LA

New Orleans, LA is the biggest metropolitan city in Louisiana. The city has over 3 million populations according to 2010 census. New Orleans, LA is the 46th biggest city in the United States of America. New Orleans is famous due to its music, cuisine, annual celebrations and festivals. It is referred as the most unique city in the United States. Located in the South-eastern Louisiana. Founded May 7, 1718. The city was named in honour of Duke of Orleans, a regent of the French kingdom. New Orleans boasts of a wide range of multicultural heritage, historical roots and abundance of architectural styles. The city has a lot of housing styles ranging from the bungalow style, intricate iron balconies, shotgun house, Creole townhouses, Creole cottages, double-gallery houses, American townhouses, raised centre-hall cottages.

The mansions are in various styles namely Victorian styles, American colonial, Italianate architecture and Greek revival, big European-style catholic cemeteries that are strategically located all through the city and so on. Some of the tallest buildings in New Orleans are Energy centre, First Bank, Plaza tower, World Trade centre New Orleans, One shell square and Trust Tower. Some of these tallest buildings are clustered around central Business district and Canal Street. The climate in this amazing city is usually humid subtropical with generally humid summers, mild winters. The highest temperature is recorded around June, July and August, while the lowest is on February. During summer time, dew points are considerably high, the driest month is October. Hurricane is one of the issues people living in this city face due to its low elevation- the reason is simple, it is surrounded by water from east, South and North and also due to Louisiana’s sinking coast. The city is very vulnerable to hurricanes.

New Orleans has a strong catholic tradition due to the colonial influence of French and Spanish settlers. Many catholic missionaries established schools during the colonial era. Also, some of the 19th and early 20th century European immigrants particularly from Germany, Italy and Ireland were all Catholics. Catholicism is the predominant religion; about 39.5% of her inhabitants are Catholics. This is why the influence of Catholicism is felt deeply in most of their cultural traditions, including its wide range of street names, parochial schools, festivals, architecture and Mardi Gras. No wonder New Orleans is gradually turning into a tourist destination for most diplomats and historians.

The population of New Orleans decreased drastically before and after the popular Hurricane Katrina, which displaced more than 800,000 people. These really shrink the population of the city. However, it later increased due to their over-reliance on tourism, oil and creation of jobs. Some of the people living in low-lying locations are disproportionately African Americans, and these are the people susceptible to storm damage and flood, compared to the affluent and white residents who live in high profile areas. New Orleans is the centre of maritime industry and has one of the most viable ports in the world, and serves as a corporate base for onshore and offshore petrochemical production, oil refining, natural gas and petroleum production. This is part of the reason why the city has a booming economy.
