New Haven, Connecticut

New Haven, in the U.S. state of Connecticut, is the principal municipality in Greater New Haven, which had a total population of 862,477 in 2010. New Haven is located on New Haven Harbor on the northern shore of the Long Island Sound in New Haven County, Connecticut, which in turn comprises the outer limits of the New York metropolitan area. New Haven is the second-largest city in Connecticut (after Bridgeport), with a population of 129,779 people as of the 2010 United States Census. According to a census of 1 July 2012, by the Census Bureau, the city had a population of 130,741. New Haven was founded in 1638 by English Puritans, and a year later eight streets were laid out in a four-by-four grid, creating what is now commonly known as the “Nine Square Plan”, now recognized by the American Institute of Certified Planners as a National Planning Landmark. The central common block is New Haven Green, a 16-acre (6 ha) square, now a National Historic Landmark and the center of Downtown New Haven.

While Greater New Haven is rife with New England heritage, even our most traditional spots – from lighthouses and charming town greens to world-class museums and Yale’s architecturally-renowned campus – become settings for lively concerts and events. Nightfall seldom means bedtime, with live bands, cool clubs, casual pubs, sophisticated lounges and theater performances around every corner. But before you head out for a night on the town, be sure to experience a meal at one of our many acclaimed restaurants, whether it’s a slice of pizza or the latest fusion cuisine. Daylight reveals a shopper’s paradise, filled with interesting boutiques, curio shops, outdoor outlets and “Main Street” stores. New Haven also reveals a haven for art enthusiasts and history buffs, with museums and galleries for every taste. Or if you’d rather get out and enjoy the outdoors, our beaches, hiking trails, parks and farms provide ample opportunities.

The New Haven area supports several medical facilities that are considered some of the best hospitals in the country. There are two major medical centers downtown: Yale – New Haven Hospital has four pavilions, including the Yale – New Haven Children’s Hospitaland the Smilow Cancer Hospital; the Hospital of Saint Raphael is several blocks north, and touts its excellent cardiac emergency care program. Smaller downtown health facilities are the Temple Medical Center located downtown on Temple Street, Connecticut Mental Health Center/across Park Street from Y-NHH, and the Hill Health Center, which serves the working-class Hill neighborhood. A large Veterans Affairs hospital is located in neighboring West Haven. To the west in Milford is Milford Hospital, and to the north in Meriden is the MidState Medical Center.

Yale and New Haven are working to build a medical and biotechnology research hub in the city and Greater New Haven region, and are succeeding to some extent. New Haven, state and Yale together run Science Park, a large site three blocks northwest of Yale’s Science Hill campus. This multi-block site, approximately bordered by Mansfield Street, Division Street, and Shelton Avenue, is the former home of Winchester’s and Olin Corporation’s 45 large-scale factory buildings. Currently, sections of the site are large-scale parking lots or abandoned structures, but there is also a large remodelled and functioning area of buildings with numerous Yale employees, financial service and biotech companies.
