Morrisville, North Carolina
Morrisville is a town located in both Wake and Durham counties of the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is also the state Capitol. As of the 2010 census the population was 18,576. The Morrisville was originally named in 1852 after Jeremiah Morris. Morris donated land to the North Carolina Railroad for a depot, water tower, and other buildings. History of Morrisville, on April 13, 1865, in the Battle of Morrisville, Federal cavalry under the command of Gen. Judson Kilpatrick skirmished with the retreating Confederate armies at Morrisville Station. Confederate troops succeeded in evacuating their remaining supplies and wounded to the west toward Greensboro, but Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s calvary forced the confederates to leave the train behind and retreat toward Durham.
Morrisville is located in the northeast central region of North Carolina, where the North American Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal Plain regions meet. This area is called the “fall line” because it marks the elevation inland at which waterfalls begin to appear in creeks and rivers. Due to this, most of Morrisville has gently rolling hills that slope eastward toward the state’s flat coastal plaln. Tobacco Road Tours on Fayetteville Street #1918, Raleigh, Morrisville is a great tour guide. You can spend a terrific three hours touring all areas of this interesting city. You get tasters of food and beverages while visiting one of the oldest restaurants in the area, Mecca. A very informative, fun and interactive tour which finishes up with either a train ride or carousel ride in Powell Park.
The RDU Observation Park located at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, across from the General Aviation Terminal is a great place to take the kids. You can watch the planes come in. You have a great view of runway 5L/23R but cannot see the other one. They pipe in air traffic control which is a nice touch. RDU is not an extremely busy airport so sometimes you have to wait a while between planes. Still it’s a great place to go for plane spotting, and there’s even a playground area for the kids.
Travinia on Market Center Drive is a great place for Italian food in Morrisville. The Caesar Salad is quite good. The romaine lettuce was fresh and the dressing was tangy but not overwhelming. The croutons were crispy but not too much so. The Sausage and Peppers Rustica is excellent. The Italian sausage is fresh tasting, the pasta perfectly cooked and the marinara actually had fresh tomatoes, as opposed to ones from a can. The service is fantastic, the staff attentive and friendly. The Capital City Chop House located on Airgate Dr is a great American steakhouse. They have a very good salad bar, the steak is excellent, but the filet is better than the ribeye. It is really a pleasant restaurant, the decor and atmosphere not elegant, but a cut above the norm, the service was marvelous with an attentive, helpful staff that is familiar with all of the dishes listed on the menu.
