Morgantown, West Virginia—Home of West Virginia University
Morgantown is located in northern West Virginia, 70 miles south of Pittsburgh, 200 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. and 150 miles east of Charleston. Sitting along the banks of the Monongahela River, the city is surrounded by a landscape of exceptional natural beauty, filled with lakes, forests and mountains. Encompassing an area of 10.62 square miles, Morgantown is the seat of Monongalia County. With a population of just under 30,000 permanent residents and several thousand university students, it is the largest city in North-Central West Virginia. Interestingly, West Virginia’s Morgantown is also the largest among the five American cities that carry the same name.
The city of Morgantown got its name from its founder, Colonel Zackquill Morgan, son of Morgan Morgan, one of the first settlers in what was later to become the state of West Virginia. Between 1769 and 1774, several ports were built in the area of present-day Morgantown, following a struggle for territory that included four sides: Native Americans and early settlers, as well as the British and the French. After the Revolutionary war, Zackquill Morgan settled the land that was earlier deeded to him by his father. In October 1785, 50 acres of this land were appropriated and laid out in lots by the Virginia General Assembly for the establishment of Morgan’s Town. On February 3, 1838, the city was officially incorporated as Morgantown, Virginia. On June 20, 1863, the city became part of the newly created state of West Virginia.
Today, Morgantown is best known as the home of West Virginia University. Founded in 1867 as the West Virginia Agricultural College, the university slowly grew to become one of the most renowned educational institutions in the state. In 2013, the American Institute of Economic Research placed Morgantown on the list of Top Ten College Towns in the U.S. Home to 26,000 students, not only is West Virginia University Morgantown’s largest and most important stakeholder, but it also has a major impact on its demographics, as nearly 65 percent of the population is aged between 18 and 34.
Being a college hub, Morgantown is also a place with outstanding nightlife and one of the most vibrant art and music scenes in West Virginia, with lots of pubs, bars, restaurants, art studios, galleries and cultural institutions such as the Monongalia Arts Center and the Metropolitan Theatre. Dining at outdoor cafés along the Mon River Rail-Trail and supporting the College football team (WVU Mountaineers) is what the locals love the most. Notable historical buildings in the area include the Old Stone House (built in 1795 and still standing)and the John Rogers family home, built in 1840. Surrounded by beautiful lakes and hills, Morgantown offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. Home to Mylan Pharmaceuticals, a leading manufacturer of generic drugs, as well as the WVU Healthcare system, it is also a noted healthcare center. With an unemployment rate of 4% and the average commute time of only 17 minutes, it’s no surprise Morgantown bares the reputation of one of the most livable American small towns.
