Montgomery is the capital of the United State of Alabama and is the county seat of Montgomery Country. Montgomery is the second largest city in Alabama with a population of 205,764 as of 2010 Census. The Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area had a 2010 estimated population of 374,536. Montgomery is the fourth-largest in the state and 136th among United States metropolitan areas. The city is a merger of two towns situated along Alabama River and was incorporated in 1819. Montgomery became the state capital in 1846. In February 1862, Montgomery was selected as the first capital of the Confederate States of America, until Richmond, Virginia took over the seat in May of the year.
The city of Montgomery is led by the mayor as the head of the executive branch of the government. The Montgomery’s city council is composed of nine members representing the legislative branch of government. The council is elected by the people to also serve a four year term. Montgomery seal is six pointed star containing the words “Cradle of the Confederacy”, “Birth Place of the Civil Rights Movement” and “City of Montgomery.” The city’s national flower is Rose, national tree is Magnolia and national bird is Cardinal. Its races are 49.6% of black, 47.4% of White. 1.2% of Hispanics/Latinos, 0.3% American Indians and Alaska natives and 1.1% Asians.
Montgomery is becoming one of the South’s hottest sports tickets. The championship had previously been played at Paterson Field in Montgomery from 1985 until 2003. Riverwalk Stadium has also been host to one Southern League All-Star game (2006) and is set to host the 2015 All-Star game.
In recent years, Montgomery has developed its economy. Montgomery became active in downtown revitalization and adopted a master plan in 2007. The master plan includes the revitalization of Court Square and the riverfront. Many other projects under construction include the revitalization of Historic Dexter Avenue, pedestrian and infrastructure improvements along the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, and the construction of a new environmental park on West Fairview Avenue. In 2004, Montgomery landed one of the biggest economic development projects when Hyundai Motors Manufacturing Alabama built its $1.4 billion automotive plant. The Montgomery location became the first assembly and manufacturing plant in the United States. Montgomery employs over 3,000 team members and currently produces the next generation Sonata sedan and Santa Fe sport utility vehicle. The Youth Initiative offers a variety of activities to engage, develop and stimulate Montgomery’s young minds thanks to partnerships with local community organizations and educational institutions. Since 2014, the Youth Initiative has served more than 405,000 meals, engaged nearly 39,000 students and cultivated relationships with more than 40 youth-oriented agencies in the River Region.
