Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis is the largest city in the state of Minnesota, considered the center of banking and industry. The placement and growth of Minneapolis was aided by the closeness of Fort Selling, the first major United States military presence in the area, and by its location to Saint Anthony Falls, which supplied power for sawmills and flour mills. Industrial development fueled the creation of railroads and banks, plus the foundation of the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. Through innovations in milling techniques, Minneapolis became a world leader in flour production, thus gaining the nickname “Mill City”. Although the sawmills and flour mills which made it great are now part of the past, Minneapolis still plays an important part in banking and industry. The two largest milling companies, General Mills and the Pillsbury Company, now merged under the General Mills name, are still prominent in the Twin Cities area.

During your visit to Minneapolis, there is one thing you should be certain to do, and that is stop by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, located on 3rd Ave. S. This place is a real treasure and it’s free. There is literally too much to see. Exploring just one small area can take ages due to the width and breadth of the displays. It covers an amazing range of periods and types of art. There is a nice collect of European and American art, with Rembrands, Degas, and Gougins on the third floor. Furthermore, there is an enormous open green park space right across the street. All you have to do is pack a snack and you can take a break mid-way through your tour and have a pleasant rest.

If you’d rather spend your time in the great outdoors in Minneapolis, there’s Minnehaha Park, located appropriately enough on Minnehaha Ave S. You can easily walk through the entire park, or rent a bike if you prefer. There are several walking paths and hiking trails, a picnic area, and plenty of recreation activities. The falls themselves are beautiful. Plus you can hike along the banks of Minnehaha Creek until it enters the Mississippi River.

One of the best restaurants in Minneapolis is the Capital Grille, located on Hennepin Ave, LaSalle Plaza. While the food is a bit expensive, it’s delicious and worth every penny, plus the service is superb. There’s also a great wine list to enjoy. Try the filet mignon if you’re a steak lover. A classic American steak house, with a friendly and helpful staff. Another good place to dine is the 112 Eatery, on N. Third Street. The food is great, the lightly battered cauliflower appetizer, delicious, the crab salad a nice mix of flavors, and the chicken and lobster entree is splendid. The ambiance is romantic, the staff attentive and the prices reasonable. Regulars are known to say that they’ve never ordered something they didn’t like. There are actually so many tasty items to try that patrons say they have to come back in order to try all of them.
