Miami: The Cultural Center of Florida

On the southeastern coast of Florida lies one of the U.S.’s major cities, Miami. The city of Miami is known to be the cultural center of Florida, thanks to its rich heritage and many cultural influences. It is also nicknamed as the “Capital of Latin America” because of its high population of Spanish Speakers. Miami is the 2nd largest city with the a high Spanish-speaking population. In fact, the cultural center of Florida is the largest U.S. City with a Cuban – American plurality. As of 2012, there were 1.2 million Cubans in greater Miami
Another nickname for Miami is the “Magic City,” since the city is said to have emerged overnight a century ago. Back in 1959, a man named Fidel Castro came into power, this lead to a large mass of Cubans migrating into Miami. A large influx of Haitian and Nicaraguans also arrived at Miami after their respective governments were overthrown in the 1970s. And to add to that, what’s known as the “Mariel boatlift” in 1980 signaled the arrival of an additional 150,000 Cubans to Miami. The city of Miami has been shaped by many cultures since the late 1960s, mainly getting influenced by Cuban cultures.

With the great influx of Cubans, the city of Miami experience a large growth in their population. The are west of downtown Miami became known as Little Havana or Calle Ocho. The place came to be with 500,000 Cuban-American and was named after Cuba’s capital city. The city of Miami holds the title of the cultural center of Florida dues its many festivals and parades, including the Calle Ocho Festival, Cultural Fridays/Viernes Culturales and the Three Kings Parade. You can also find tons of colorful street life, full of local businesses in Little Havana, and restaurants with some of the most incredible and authentic Cuban delicacies as well as museums and theaters. Miami is one of the greatest places to experience the Cuban and Cuban-American culture.
