Louisville, Kentucky—Gateway to the South
Louisville (locally pronounced lou-ah-vul) is the largest city in Kentucky. With a population of 760,026 residents, it ranks as the 30th largest city in the United States. Situated along the border between Kentucky and Indiana, on the banks of the Ohio River, Louisville is often referred to as both the northernmost Southern city and the southernmost Northern city in the US. Founded in 1778 by explorer George Rogers Clark and officially incorporated in 1828, Louisville takes its name after King Louis XVI of France, in appreciation for his help during the American War for Independence. Although Louisville was a major stronghold of Union forces during the Civil War, the epithet describing the city as the “Gateway to the South” has a more recent and peaceable origin. In 1929, namely, during the opening of the Clark Memorial Bridge, a huge sign was erected that read: “The Gateway to the South—Louisville Gas & Electric Co.”
Louisville’s location at the Falls of Ohio played a major role in the establishment and development of the city. Since the falls created a natural barrier for river travel, at this stopping point, settlements started to form, eventually evolving into a major shipping port. The fact that river boats passing through had to unload all of their cargo before crossing the falls sparked Louisville’s early growth, while the arrival of the steamboat in the early 1800s propelled it even further. By 1830, Louisville was already the largest city in Kentucky.
Today, Louisville is a prosperous industrial, shipping, commercial and educational center, most prominent for its horse races, Kentucky Fried Chicken, the University of Louisville, the Louisville Cardinals sport teams and Louisville Slugger baseball bats. By far the most recognizable symbol and attraction of the city is the Kentucky Derby—the longest continuously running sporting event in America. Held on the first Saturday of each May at Churchill Downs, the three-year-old thoroughbred horse race is often referred to as the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” and “The Run for the Roses.” In addition to a 14-carat gold trophy and an estimated $1.3 million prize, the Kentucky Derby winner also receives a blanket of 564 red roses. The current race record is one minute and 59.40 seconds, and it was set by Secretariat in 1973.
Louisville is also blessed with a vibrant arts scene, featuring the Kentucky Center for the Arts, as well as several fine museums and annual festivals. Filled with over 269 religious institutions of various faiths, Louisville is also known as the “City of Beautiful Churches.” Historic and cultural points of interest include the Frazier History Museum, the Conrad-Caldwell House, the Speed Art Museum, as well as the Muhammad Ali Center—a multicultural museum that showcases the life of the most famous Louisvillian. Apart from the boxing legend, Louisville has been the hometown of many notable people, such as Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States, and Louis D. Brandeis, the first Jewish Justice on the Supreme Court.
