Las Vegas, Nevada—Sin City (and the Gambling Capital of the World)

Las Vegas—or “the meadows” as its Spanish name translates—is the largest city in the state of Nevada. Las Vegas was born in 1905, when William Andrews Clark sold 110 acres of land adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks for $265,000. Officially incorporated in 1911, over the course of just 100 years, the small railroad town grew to become the most populous American city that was founded in the 20th century. Today, Las Vegas has a population of 603,488 and a wider metropolitan area of above 2 million, which makes it the 29th largest city in the USA. With 4,000 to 8,000 people moving here each month, it’s also one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

Mostly famous for its mega hotels and casinos, Las Vegas is considered to be the gambling and entertainment capital of the world. The major events that shaped Las Vegas as a gambling center occurred in 1931, when the construction of the Hoover Damn began, bringing thousands of workers into the city. At the same time, the state of Nevada decided to legalize gambling. Consisted solely of males from across the country, the work force created a market for large scale entertainment. In an odd cooperation of local Las Vegas business owners, Mormon investors and Mafiosi, the first casinos and showgirl theaters began to flourish.

Las Vegas’ embrace of numerous forms of adult entertainment earned it the popular title of “Sin City”. The most famous and largest casinos in Las Vegas, however, are located outside the city limits, on the so-called Vegas Boulevard, most commonly known as the Strip. Synonymous with lavishly decorated hotels, Las Vegas is one of the top tourist destinations worldwide, receiving more than 40 million visitors each year. Out of the 30 biggest hotels in the world, 18 are located in Las Vegas, such as the luxurious MGM Grand (6852 rooms and suites) and the 53-floor Venetian-Palazzo complex, the world’s largest hotel from 2008 to 2015. Aside from gambling, the live entertainment of Las Vegas is what attracts the most tourists. Since the beginning of the casino era, some of the most popular talents in show business have performed in Vegas—stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand and Tom Jones.

But Las Vegas is more than just wild nightlife, slot machines and showgirls. In addition to its glamour, the desert metropolis is also home to many museums, such as the Mob Museum, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, the DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, as well as the Neon Museum, which displays many of the signs from Las Vegas’ historical businesses and casinos. There are over sixty parks in Las Vegas, with plenty of golf courses. Other outdoor attractions include the Death Valley National Monument, Red Rock Canyon, the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, which is one of the largest man-made lakes in America. With over 300,000 students enrolled in the school system, Las Vegas is also an important education center, home to top-rate universities such as the University of Nevada, the Nevada State College, and the College of Southern Nevada.
