Lansing is the capital of the state of Michigan. Lansing is located primarily in Ingham County, although parts of the city exited west into Eaton County and north into Clinton County. According to the 2010 Census the Lansing’s populate is 114,297, making it the fifth largest city in Michigan. Lansing was chosen as the new state capital of Michigan in 1847, ten years after its admittance as a state. The Lansing Metropolitan Area, or “Mid-Michigan”, is a vital center for education, culture, government, commercial, and industrial functions. The first person of European descent to see the area that is now Lansing was explorer Hugh Heward in 1790 while canoeing the Grand River. The land that would be Lansing was surveyed in February 1827 in what was then thick, overgrown forest.
In the winder of 1835 and early 1836, two brothers from New York plotted the area now called REO Town just south of downtown Lansing and named it “Biddle City”. All of the land lay in a floodplain and was underwater during the greater part of the year. Unheeding, the brothers went back to Lansing, New York, to sell plots for the town that did not exist. They told the residents of the New York town that this new “city” had an area of 65 blocks, a church and a public and academic square. There were 16 men who bought plots in the nonexistent city and when they reached the area later that year discovered they had been scammed. Many in the group were just too disappointed to stay and they ended up settling around what is now metropolitan Lansing. Those who did stay swiftly renamed the area “Lansing Township” in honor of their home village in New York. By 1859, the settlement had grown to nearly 3,000 and was declared a city. Most of Lansing today is the result of Lansing becoming an industrial powerhouse which began with the founding of the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in August 1897. Over time Lansing transformed itself into a major American industrial center.

Every time you go you’ll learn something new. Parking is close by and there’s no charge to enter, plus cameras are permitted. This is a beautiful historical building and the dome is magnificent. Another treat for the whole family is the Potter Park Zoo. Located on S. Pennsylvania Ave, it’s a great place to spend the entire day. The zoo holds over 100 species of animals, many of which are on the Endangered Species List, such as Black Rhinos, Siberian Tigers, Red Pandas and Snow Leopards. Since the place isn’t very large there isn’t a lot of walking required and you can take it slow and enjoy looking around. There is a picnic area outside of the zoo ad a seating area inside the zoo where you can stop for a bite to eat.
The Soup Spoon Cafe offers a pleasant experience for families in Lansing. Located on E. Michigan Ave., it provides very good food, all of it fresh, and the place is clean and neat. The sandwiches and soup are tasty and they have a large breakfast menu to help you start out your day. You might want to try the ribeye sandwich with bacon, or the crab cakes which are excellent. You could also stop by DE Luca’s Restaurant on W. Willow Street, where it’s a guarantee that you won’t go away hungry. The deep dish pizza is very satisfying, ad the cheese breadsticks are great too. The salads are tasty, the ravioli and meatballs delicious. In fact, all the food is excellent, the service is prompt, and the portions are large enough that some people need a carry out box to take their leftovers home.
