Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri and the sixth largest in the Midwest. U.S. Census Bureau statistics state the city had a populate of 475,378 in 2015. Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port at its convergence with the Kansas River coming in from the west. Positioned on Missouri’s western border, with the downtown area near the merging of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, Kansas City has several refined neighborhoods, each rich with history, such as: one of America’s largest public farmers markets located in the River Market District in the north, the cradle of a distinctive form of jazz in the 18th and Vine District in the east, and the Spanish-style architecture and upscale shops of the Country Club Plaza in the south.

Kansas City was in 1833 that John McCoy established West Port along the Santa Fe Trail, 3 miles away from the river. In 1834 McCoy established Westport Landing on a bend in the Missouri to serve as a landing port for West Port. Soon after, the Kansas Town Company, a group of investors, began to settle the area, taking their name from an English spelling of “Cansez.” In 1853 the landing area officially became Kansas City.

If you’re looking for something a bit different to do in Kansas City, then take a tour of the Arabia Steamboat Museum located on Grand Blvd. It will prove to be one of the most amazing museums you have ever visited. There is a Civil War era steam boat which sunk after hitting a snag i the Missouri River, and it was quickly brought below the water/mudline, which successfully preserved all of the contents intact. All of this is on display for public viewing and is truly fascinating. There’s a very interesting story behind the museum as well. Visiting this museum is very worth while. The Kansas City Zoo, located on Zoo Dr., is definitely worth a stop. The path meandering through the zoo is easy to follow, and since the zoo is only mid-sized, you won’t get too tired out. They have many really great exhibits, and a large variety of animals. The polar bear exhibit and the Penguin house are just two that are particularly good.

Q39 is an excellent barbecue restaurant located on W. 39th St in Kansas City. Not only is the food delicious, but they serve very large portions, so make sure you come HUNGRY! The beef brisket comes highly recommended, and their menu is loaded with unique selections you can’t find anywhere else. Fun, energetic atmosphere and hospitable staff. The Beer Kitchen is another fabulous restaurant located on Westport Road. Their BK burger for $9.50 with “Mini” sweet potato fries for $4 is wonderful. The burger is juicy and the sweet potato fries among the best there are. Another good bet is the Reuben sandwich with regular fries. The fries are great, the corned beef perfectly cooked and tasty, and the sauce and sauerkraut are good as well. For breakfast or brunch, try their biscuits and gravy which are fantastic.
