Jackson is the capital of the state of Mississippi. Jackson is also the largest city in Mississippi. Jackson is situated on the Pearl River, which drains into the Gulf of Mexico, ad it is part of the Jackson Prairie region of the state. Jackson is named for General Andrew Jackson, who was honored for his role in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and later became President. Jackson has had numerous prominent musicians in blues, gospel, and jazz, and was known for decades for its illegal nightclubs on the Gold Coast. Jackson is the anchor for the metro area. While Jackson’s population declined from 184,256 to 173,514 at the 2010 census, the metropolitan region grew.
The land composing the city of Jackson was originally part of the large territory occupied by the Choctaw Nation, who had inhabited the area for thousands of years prior to the Europeans. The Jackson area was obtained by the United States under the terms of the Treaty of Doak’s Stand in 1820, under which the Choctaw ceded some of their land. Jackson had significant growth in the early twentieth century, which produced dramatic changes in the city’s skyline. Jackson’s economic growth was further stimulated in the 1930s by the discovery of natural gas fields nearby. Since Jackson has become the medical and legal center of the state, it has attracted Jewish professionals in both fields. Since the late 20th century, it has developed the largest Jewish community in the state. In 2013, Jackson was named as one of the top 10 friendliest cities in the U.S. by CN Traveler. The city was noticed for friendly people, great food, and green and pretty public places.
The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, located on Riverside Drive, has all the requirements for a great place to spend some time in the summer in Jackson. It’s fun, educational, and above all, air conditioned! The are many great exhibits about the state that remain on site, and then there are traveling exhibits that are all part of the admission fee. The fish, alligators, bears, birds, and turtles are fun too. A visit to the State Capitol is an excellent experience for the whole family too. Located on High Street, it is definitely a place worth stopping by. The building is impressive with exquisite detailing, especially the domes. The capitol is actually a museum loaded with history, artifacts and more. You have the choice of a guided tour or a self guided tour, although with a guided tour you are likely to learn much more. The staff is pleasant, knowledgeable, and very helpful.
The Iron Horse Grill on West Pearl Street is a great steakhouse in Jackson. They have a wonderful atmosphere with great live music, terrific food, and awesome drinks. There are also plenty of local Mississippi beers on tap. The Shrimp and Grits is good, and they have some excellent Mexican dishes too. Housed in the old Armour Company Smokehouse and Distribution Plant building, 1906, it burned down twice, 1998 and 1999, but is fully restored and an outstanding place to have dinner. Then you have Walker’s, located on N State St. When you first glance at the neon sign it appears to be a burger joint right out of the 50’s, but don’t be fooled. This is an excellent spot for quality food and wine in Jackson. The filet mignon here is absolutely divine! The fish is great too. They have an extensive wine list. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu.
