Greensboro, North Carolina
Greensboro is a city in the state of North Carolina. It is the third largest city in North Carolina. According to the 2012 U.S. Census, the population is 277,080. Three major interstate highways were built to intersect at Greensboro. Following the American Revolutionary War, the city of Greensboro was named after Major General Nathanael Greene, commander of the rebel American forces at the Battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781. Although the Americans lost the battle, Greene’s forces inflicted heavy casualties on the British Army of General Charles Cornwallis. After this battle, Cornwallis withdrew his troops to a British coastal base in Wilmington, North Carolina. At the time of the European encounter, the inhabitants of the area that was to become Greensboro were a Siouan-speaking people known as the Saura. Other indigenous cultures had occupied this area for thousands of years, settling along the waterways, as did the early settlers.
Though Greensboro developed slowly, early wealth created in the 18th and 19th centuries from cotton trade and merchandising resulted in the owners’ constructing several notable buildings. The earliest of these, later named Blandwood Mansion and Gardens, was built by a planter in 1795.
Greensboro’s downtown area has attracted development investment in recent years with such new construction as Yadkin Bank Park, and residential homes and offices. The Greensboro Science Center on Lawndale Drive is one of Greensboro’s finest museums. The exhibits are great, the skywalk is a fun time, and they are expanding the aquarium. There’s a tiger, gibbons, and even baby otters to entertain you. There are summer programs affordable for families, homeschool programs and more. There’s something new going on every day, so you never know what to expect, but be sure that you will have a great time.
The Bog Garden at Benjamin Park, located at Hobbs Road and Starmount Farms Road is a great place for the whole family to receive a tranquil education about nature. The space is beautiful, and there is plenty of opportunity to learn about local flora and fauna. The Bog Garden is a natural area through the woods behind Friendly Center that has a great walking path with boardwalk decking installed. It’s a nice walk and you can see wildlife if you sit and observe, plus there’s a great lake with various kinds of waterfowl.
Sarah’s Kabob Shop on West Market Street in Greensboro, is a fantastic assortment of American, Mediterranean, Greek, and Middle Eastern food. You cannot find better food around for what is a very reasonable price. If you like gyros, Greek/Lebanese salad, hummus, etc this is the place for you. They also have great desserts. The staff is wonderful, the service fast, there just seems to be nothing bad to say about this place. The Green Valley Grill on Green Valley Road is a mix of Mediterranean European, and American food. They have a seasonal menu so don’t be surprised if you find something you love and return to find it’s no longer offered. They will likely bring it back shortly. The bread, the steak, the lasagna, the sea scallops, and the wine are particularly good. The atmosphere is professional, the staff helpful and attentive. You’ll be glad you went.
