Grand Rapids, Michigan

Grand Rapids was founded in 1831 by Louis Campau, and proceeded to grow into today’s downtown business district. Grand Rapids, is the second largest city in Michigan, and the largest city in West Michigan. It is located on the Grand River 30 miles east of Lake Michigan. The 2010 census stated that Grand Rapids’ population was 188,040. Grand Rapids made its fame as a historic furniture manufacturing center, and is still home to five of the world’s top office furniture companies, and bears the nickname Furniture City. Grand Rapids also has a more modern nickname of River City which is a reference to the landmark river for which it was named. Grand Rapids and its surrounding communities are economically diverse, based in the health care, automotive, aviation, information technology, and consumer goods manufacturing industries. Grand Rapids is the hometown of U.S. President Gerald Ford, who along with his wife Betty is buried on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

For thousands of years, cultures of indigenous peoples lived in Grand Rapids. It was 2,000 years ago when people of the Hopewell culture lived in the Grand River Valley. Around A.D. 1700, the Ottawa, who occupied territory around the Great Lakes, moved into the area and founded several villages along the Grand River. In 1826 Louis Campau, from Detroit, the official founder of Grand Rapids, built his cabin, trading post, and blacksmith shop on the east bank of the Grand River near the rapids. In 1831, Campau bought 72 acres from the federal government for $90 and called his tract Grand Rapids. Gradually it grew into today’s main downtown business district.

If you happen to find yourself at loose ends while in Grand Rapids, Michigan, you should go and visit the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park located on Beltline Ave NE. These gardens are awesome. If you want to save wear and tear on your feet, then take the shuttle around the gardens first to get a sense of the whole set up. Then hop off and walk to the areas that interest you. The Japanese Gardens are a must see, stunningly beautiful and serene. The sculpture park is also worth a special effort to see. The volunteers who will gladly show you about the place are knowledgeable and passionate about the work they do. The grounds are well maintained, with a large variety of flowers, trees and shrubs. There’s a pleasant little gift shop and a Japanese Tea House. And before you go, don’t forget to check out the giant horse.

Looking for a place to dine in Grand Rapids? Try Marie Catrib’s of Grand Rapids, located on Lake Dr. SE. The food is great, the staff friendly and helpful. The corn beef is fantastic, the cold beet salad amazing, the Reuben sandwich excellent, and the pudding is something to rave about. There’s a good yogurt parfait with homemade granola which is tasty too. The place is nice and well lit. The staff is pleasant, and there are many healthy dishes to choose from. Leo’s is another place which is quite good as well. Located on Ottawa Ave., NW. The restaurant is elegant, with a friendly, helpful wait staff. The food is delicious including the seafood and the steak. If you’re looking for a great dessert, have a Brandy Alexander, (an ice cream dessert drink you’ll thoroughly enjoy).
