Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Incorporated on March 27, 1911, encompassing approximately 36 square miles with an estimated population of 176,013, Fort Lauderdale is the largest of Broward County’s 31 municipalities and the eighth largest city in Florida. Embraced by the Atlantic Ocean, New River and a myriad of scenic inland waterways, Fort Lauderdale truly lives up to its designation as the “Venice of America.” An advantageous economic climate is helping the City of Fort Lauderdale establish itself as a world-class international business center and one of the most desirable locations for new, expanding or relocating businesses. Once known strictly as a tourism-based economy, Fort Lauderdale now supports a diverse range of industries, including marine, manufacturing, finance, insurance, real estate, high technology, avionics/aerospace, and film and television production.

Fort Lauderdale is famous for its beaches, arts, culture and events. From shopping on Las Olas Boulevard, to gondola rides on the canals, to a historic riverfront. Just two miles north of Port Everglades, you can experience a landscaped beachfront promenade, with Fort Lauderdale signature white wave wall and brick paved path. Across the street, visit luxury hotels, and enjoy shopping or dining or a narrated 90-minute amphibious tour of quaint Las Olas Boulevard, historical districts, and the mansions and yachts dotting Millionaires Row. Stop at the Stranahan House, a preserved 1900s home furnished with antiques of the era. Or “follow the red brick road” of Riverwalk, the landscaped park, to the Arts and Entertainment District.

Fort Lauderdale’s economy has diversified over time. From the 1940s through the 1980s, Fort Lauderdale was known as a spring break destination for college students. However, the college crowd has since dwindled, with Fort Lauderdale now attracting wealthier tourists. Cruise ships and nautical recreation provide the basis for much of the revenue raised by tourism. There is a convention center located west of the beach and southeast of downtown, with 600,000 square feet (55,742 m2) of space, including a 200,000-square-foot (18,581 m2) main exhibit hall. Approximately 30% of the city’s 10 million annual visitors attend conventions at the center.

The year 2011 marked the celebration of Fort Lauderdale’s Centennial. The historic milestone offered us an opportunity to observe and honor our City’s past. It was a time when neighbors young and old could reflect upon how Fort Lauderdale began, recognize the challenges we had overcome, and appreciate the accomplishments we had achieved. Now, in 2013, it is time to look ahead. It is time to prepare for our coming challenges and to anticipate the many opportunities that still await us. It is time to “Fast Forward Fort Lauderdale!” To thoughtfully chart a course for our future, Fort Lauderdale has developed a Vision Plan, the heart of which is our 2035 Vision Statement. Our Vision Statement is an inspirational view of the future and what our community wants to become. It is a fusion of the collective values and aspirations that have been expressed by a diverse cross-section of our neighbors during the two-and-a-half year citywide Visioning initiative. The outreach effort that took place was extensive, collecting 1,562 unique ideas pdf from our highly active and invested community. It became apparent early on that we are a forward-looking community that is strongly invested in the progressive future and developing legacy of our City.
