Falls Church, Virginia—the Little City

The independent city of Falls Church, also referred to as Falls Church City, is located in north-eastern Virginia, in the Washington Metropolitan Area, off Route 66 and just seven miles from the nation’s capital. Although Falls Church has a population of only 12,332, its nickname does not reflect the number of residents, but rather its tiny footprint. With a total area of just 2.2 square miles (5.2 square kilometers), it’s easy to understand why it earned the cute epithet “ Little City.” Not only is Falls Church the smallest independent city by area in Virginia, but it is also the smallest county-equivalent in the United States.

The City of Falls Church got its name from the 18th century Anglican parish. Built of wood in 1733, it was originally known as “ William Gunnell’s Church.” Its initial building cost, interestingly, was 33,500 pounds of tobacco. First referred to it as the “ Falls Church” in 1757, it is also the place where George Washington served as a vestryman. In 1875, Falls Church gained township within Fairfax County. In 1948, it was incorporated as an independent city. Throughout the centuries, the church was many times remodeled and expanded—last time in the late 1990’s, when a new sanctuary was built because the congregation outgrew the present structure.

Falls Church’s median household income is $122,844 and the income per capita is $57,784. Home to Fortune 500 companies such as Computer Sciences Corporation, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman and ENSCO, Falls Church is one of the richest counties in the United States. Apart from its industry, Falls Church also has a vibrant cultural scene. In addition to the State Theatre, there is a diverse array of restaurants and bars. Another authentic spot is the Eden Center, also known as Little Saigon, where the visitors can immerse themselves in the smells, sights, sounds and tastes of Vietnam. Apart from the eminent Falls Church, the list of noticeable historic sites includes the Birch House, the Cherry Hill Farmhouse and Mount Hope. There are five public schools in Falls Church, with a total of 2,415 students that were enrolled in the 2013-2014 school year.

By all measures, Falls Church is a very safe place to live. In addition to having the lowest level of poverty compared to any other independent city and county in America, according to the F.B.I., Falls Church also has some of the lowest levels of crime in the state of Virginia. According to the annual statistics, in 2012 Falls Church had a total of 211 property crimes and only 11 violent crimes. Overall, a Falls Church resident had just a 1 in 58 risk of becoming a victim of a crime. According to Centrum’s Healthiest Cities Study, Falls Church is ranked second in the United States. Together with Washington D.C., Falls Church was also named “ Best City for Teleworking” in America, according to a study conducted by Intel Corporation.
