Edwardsville is a city in Madison County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, Edwardsville population was 24,293. It is the county seat of Madison County and is the third oldest city in the State of Illinois. Edwardsville was named in honor of Ninian Edwards, then Governor of the Illinois Territory. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, the Edwardsville Arts Center, the Edwardsville Journal, the Madison County Record, and the Edwardsville Intelligencer are located here. Edwardsville High School and Metro-East Lutheran High School serve students in the area. Edwardsville is a part of Southern Illinois, the Metro East region, and Greater St. Louis. It is part of the Edwardsville School District, which also includes the villages of Glen Carbon, Hamel, and Moro, as well as the townships areas around them. A 2010 issue of Family Circle magazine named Edwardsville third of their “Top 10 Best Towns for Families.”
Edwardsville was first settled in 1805 when Thomas Kirkpatrick built a one-room log cabin on the ridge above Cahokia Creek. His cabin was approximately 300-yards from North Main Street at the north end of O Street. The oldest known building in Edwardsville today is a log cabin concealed under modern siding at 1712 North Main Street. This site is northwest of the Kirkpatrick cabin site. The first seat of government when President James Madison announced formation of Madison County in 1812 was Kirkpatrick’s cabin. Edwardsville’s first public square was located in the 1200 block of North Main Street. By 1814, the square contained a log cabin that served as the county jail. The square became home to the first courthouse, also a log structure, in 1817.
Each year residents of Edwardsville who keep the city beautiful with their landscaping and gardening efforts are recognized by the Edwardsville Beautification and Tree Commission. The Green Thumb Committee members include: Wilma Jene Bond, Mike Reinhardt, photographer Samantha Sponeman and chair Zyann Kinney. The committee members visit nominated gardens and select the most outstanding properties to be honored with the Green Thumb Award. Each recipient receives a letter of congratulations and a certificate from Mayor Hal Patton, and a Green Thumb sign posted on their property for one month. Residential, commercial, neighborhood and public beautification settings will be recognized. The awards program is an easy, fun way to demonstrate neighborhood and civic pride.
Scenes for the movie The Lucky Ones, starring Tim Robbins and Rachel McAdams, were filmed in downtown Edwardsville in June 2007. However, the scene filmed was set in Denver, Colorado, and banners were hung on Edwardsville’s Main Street that read, “Welcome to Denver.” Scenes for the 1978 film Stingray were filmed in downtown Edwardsville, as well as in neighboring Alton, Illinois. Actor Christopher Mitchum, second son of Robert Mitchum, starred in the film. (This film is not to be confused with Corvette Summer, released in the same year.) Singer Jackson Browne recorded “Cocaine” and “Shaky Town” in Edwardsville’s Holiday Inn Room 124 for his album Running on Empty. It is now a Comfort Inn located at 3080 S. Route 157.
