Durham, North Carolina

Durham is a city in the state of North Carolina. As of July 1, 2014 the U.S. Census stated the Durham’s population was 251,893. Durham is the home of Duke University and North Carolina Central University. The Eno and the Occoneechi, related to the Sioux and the Shakori, lived on and farmed the land which became Durham. It’s possible they established a village called Adshusheer on the site. The Great Indian Trading Path has been traced through Durham, and Native Americans helped to mold the area by establishing settlements and commercial transportation routes.

Durham’s location is the result of the requirements of the 19h century railroad industry. The wood-burning steam locomotives of the time had to stop often for wood and water and the new North Carolina Railroad needed a depot between the settled towns of Raleigh and Hillsborough. Eventually a railway depot was established on land donated by Bartlett S. Durham in 1849. In 1869 Durham County was created and named for Dr. Bartlett Durham. In recent years Durham has increased revitalization of its downtown and undergone an economic and cultural renaissance of a kind. If you’re paying a visit to Durham, then the Sarah P. Duke Gardens should be top on your list of things to do. Located on Anderson Street, these gardens can best be described as captivating. Not only are the gardens themselves magnificent, but there is plenty of place to walk around and enjoy the streams, wildlife and general serenity. It’s an experience you’ll want to have again.

A treat for the whole family is the Museum of Life & Science on West Murray Ave in Durham. Here you’ve got something for everyone. You don’t have to be a kid to have fun here. The winding trails through outdoor exhibits make for a nice, relaxed walk. There’s a great lemur exhibit in the back of the grounds, and a terrific butterfly house. Plus, there’s a pleasant coffee shop for an afternoon cup while you rest. Nana’s Restaurant on University Dr, Ste 104 is undoubtedly the best restaurant in Durham. If you’re in the mood for a little socializing they have a pleasant bar scene, although as the evening progresses it can get a little crowded, but this shouldn’t be a problem. You can eat at the bar or get a table for a nice, relaxing dinner.

Their rotating menu makes certain that there’s always something new to try with a local flare. The food and wine are fantastic, and the staff considerate and friendly. You definitely have to give it a try. The Guglhupf Cafe on Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. The Suite #1 is also a great bet for a good meal. The food is always prepared to perfection, the beer selection is excellent, and the German menu items are always the best of their kind in the area. Weather permitting you can have your dinner outside if you prefer on a nice private patio. The service is excellent and the staff friendly and helpful.
