Your Connector & Legal Recruiting Solution
Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan, grew from a small fur trading post of New France to the status of a world-class industrial powerhouse and the fourth largest American city by the middle of the 20th century. Detroit was settled in 1701. It’s name comes from the Detroit River, in French meaning the strait of Lake Erie, which links Lake Huron and Lake Erie. After a ravaging fire in 1805, Augustus B. Woodward came up with a street plan akin to Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s design for Washington D.C. Detroit’s monumental avenues and traffic circles fan out in radial fashion from Campus Martius Park in the heart of the city, which facilitates traffic patterns along the city’s tree-lined boulevards and parks. Main thoroughfares radiate outward from Detroit’s center like spokes in a wheel.
If you like art, then a visit to the Detroit Institute of Arts is in order. Located on Woodward Ave, this museum was referred to as the most “visitor friendly art museum in the country” by the Wall Street Journal. General admission is free for residents of Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties, though special exhibitions can sometimes be extra. There is a dizzying array of activities going on there, with art, dancing, crafts, jazz, concerts, etc. Children will be especially interested in their armor exhibit which has a special children’s pamphlet to tell them all about it. Also, the Diego Rivera Detroit industry murals are a can’t miss for every tourist. Plus there’s an unexpectedly rich collection representing art and artists of all media, areas, and eras.
If you’re looking for a really unique experience in Detroit, visit The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, located on Piquette Ave. Visiting this plant is a one of a kind experience — it’s the oldest auto plant open to the public anywhere in the world. Just think. You will be touring a 104 year old factory where the “Car of the Century” was actually created, in an area of Detroit which was the center of the American auto industry. Almost unchanged since Henry Ford’s day, the plant is a three-story New England-style mill building. Not only are there plenty of examples of the cars that were produced there, but the interesting story of “Milwaukee Junction” is told, and all the displays are fun, making the tour lively and unusual.
Love pizza? Pizza Papalis on Monroe Street in Detroit will make your heart beat faster. While their pizza receives rave reviews, they also have a delicious pasta. The place has a laid back, family oriented, cozy ambiance, with roomy dark wood booths to match the mahogany beams on the ceilings and walls. Great food, great drinks, and a terrific time! There’s also the Selden Standard, labeled by Trip Advisor as one of the top four restarts in Detroit. They serve truly fine meals. Every course is creative, tasty and memorable. Their Seasonal salad is fresh with bright, crisp flavors, and their Lamb argue is fabulous. There’s a great Arugula & Date Salad, Charred Octopus if you are so inclined, and chocolate cream puffs for dessert. The atmosphere is friendly and warm, but it’s the wonderful food that will keep you coming back!
