Columbia, South Carolina
Columbia, The Capital of Southern Hospitality, is the state capital and the largest city of South Carolina, U.S. Geographically located northwest of the state of South Carolina; lying between two converging rivers, Saluda River and Broad River to form the Congaree River in Columbia. The city is within the humid subtropical climate zone, with long and hot summers, and short and mild winters. According to the 2010 census, Columbia has 129,272 people (58.5% are male and 48.5% are female), 45,666 households, and 22,638 families. A brief history about Columbia, the name is derived from the word Columbiad, which pertains to the discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus. The first inhabitants of the area were the Congaree people. In 1540, one Spanish expedition travelled across this area while heading north; thus producing the earliest written records of the land. Even before it became a city in 1786, Columbia served an important role in the overall development of South Carolina: It was a frontier fort on the west of the Congaree River and at the same time head of navigation in the Santee River System. There had been numerous debates on what the name should be – Columbia or Washington – but Columbia won by 11-7 vote in the state senate. In 1800s, South Carolina College (present day University of South Carolina) was founded in Columbia to unite the Upcountry and Lowcountry; The First Baptist Church barely missed the burning by Sherman’s soldiers. In 1900s, Columbia emerged as the regional textile manufacturing center while other businesses bloomed including banks, arcades, and hotels.
Today, Columbia’s economical growth flourished throughout the years. Being the capital of the state, major employers are now in the area including Palmetto Health Hospital System, University of South Carolina, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Palmetto GBA. Large manufacturing companies such as Michelin, Pirelli, Bose Technology and many others also have facilities in Columbia. Urban development projects have also been continued since it began in late 1900s. The Congaree Vista (formerly Warehouse district) is now a central business district for art galleries, shops and restaurants, where historic buildings have been rehabilitated.
