Cleveland is a culturally diverse metropolis located on the shores of Lake Erie, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Many recreational, cultural and educational opportunities are plentiful throughout Northeast Ohio in Cleveland. You’ll find world-class museums and cultural events, professional sports and amusement parks, and the most golf courses per capita in the States. Cleveland is known as the Mistake on the Lake due to the Cleveland Browns, the Rock ‘n Roll Capitaldue to the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, and the Forest Citydue to the forested nature of the city. Due to its proximity to Lake Erie, the Cleveland area is often referred to locally as The North Coast. Cleveland has a total population of 390,113, making it the 48th largest metropolitan in the United States, and the second largest in Ohio after Columbus. Residents of Cleveland are called Clevelanders.
Cleveland exhibits a continental climate with four distinct seasons, which lies in the humid continentalzone. Summers are warm to hot and humid while winters are cold and snowy. The Lake Erie shoreline is very close to the east-west from the mouth of the Cuyahoga west to Sandusky, but at the mouth of the Cuyahoga, it turns sharply northeast. This feature is the principal contributor to the lake effect snow that is typical in Cleveland from mid-November until the surface of Lake Erie freezes, usually in late January or early February.
The lake effect in Cleveland also causes a relative differential in geographical snowfall totals across the city: while Hopkins Airport, on the city’s far West Side, has only reached 100 inches of snowfall in a season three times since record-keeping for snow began in 1893, seasonal totals approaching or exceeding 100 inches are not uncommon as the city ascends into the Heights on the east, where the region is known as the ‘Snow Belt’ begins. Extending from Cleveland’s East Side and its suburbs, the Snow Belt reaches up the Lake Erie shore as far as Buffalo.
On average in Cleveland, July is the warmest month with a mean temperature of 73.5 °F (23.1 °C), and January, with a mean temperature of 28.1 °F (−2.2 °C), is the coldest. Normal yearly precipitation based on the 30-year average from 1981 to 2010 is 39.1 inches (990 mm). The least precipitation occurs on the western side and directly along the lake, and the most occur in the eastern suburbs. Parts of Geauga County to the east receive over 44 inches (1,100 mm) of liquid precipitation annually. Frequent thunderstorms are also common in Cleveland especially during spring and early summer. Cleveland’s cuisine include an abundance of Polish and Central European contributions, such as kielbasa, cabbage, and pierogis. Cleveland also has plenty of corned beef, with nationally renowned Slyman’s, on the near East Side. Other famed sandwiches include the Cleveland original, Polish Boy, a local favorite found at many BBQ and Soul food restaurants. Now is the best time to visit Cleveland. Experience the upcoming summertime by visiting major landmarks like museums, heritage buildings, parks and the bustling downtown. Learn more about Cleveland’s dining, tourist attractions, and events.
