The city of Clayton in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States, borders the city of St. Louis. As of the 2010 census the population was 15,939. Clayton was created in 1877 and is named for Ralph Clayton, who donated the land for the courthouse. Clayton is also famous for its multiple skyscrapers in the business district. Over the intervening 25 years, Clayton slowly grew from a place of forests and farmland to a small town. By the late 1940s, Clayton was caught up in a building and business boom that would change the city from a quaint suburb to the hub of the St. Louis metropolitan area. In the decades since, Clayton has continue to grow and prosper. But regardless of the metropolitan nature of the Central Business District, Clayton still maintains a safe, secure residential community.
While there just aren’t all that many things to do in Clayton, Sasha’s Wine Bar on DeMun Ave is worth stopping by. They offer a great selection of wines and beers. The service is excellent, the atmosphere cozy and casual. The food is good and the menu has a few tasty surprises. You’ll be glad you came. Also, you should explore downtown Clayton. That’s the area’s business and financial hub, with several architecturally interesting residential neighborhoods. The vibrant downtown area has many fine restaurants, art galleries, cultural attractions, and even premium boutique shopping.
Pastaria, located on Forsyth Blvd in Clayton has some pretty incredible food. It’s packed just about every night, so you might want to go early. The bread, pasta, Risotto Balls, and gelato are incredible. Also, you can watch everything being made in the open kitchen. As far as drinks go, the Bloody Marys are tasty, the brown ale and white wine also quite good. Plus the service is excellent, the staff friendly and helpful. The Cafe Napoli, located on Forsyth Blvd in the heart of Clayton is one of the most elegant restaurants in Clayton. The service is excellent, the staff knowledgeable and friendly. A nice touch is the fact that they will bring you a try so you can see the specials of the day. Most restaurants don’t do that nowadays. Also, there’s an outdoor patio that has TVs to watch sporting events when the weather permits. Be sure that you’re hungry when you go, because the portions are quite large and so good that you don’t want to leave anything on your plate. It may be a little costly for some, but it’s worth every penny and more.
Clayton is served by the Metrolink light rail system. The city has two stations along the Blue Line: Clayton, and Forsyth. Metro also operates bus services in Clayton. Major roads and highways in Clayton include Interstate 170, Brentwood Boulevard, Hanley Road, and Forest Park Parkway. Old Bonhomme (renamed Forsythe Boulevard when it changes from North-South to East-West direction) in North Clayton is an ancient Native American trail. Wydown Boulevard in Clayton was called one of the nation’s most dignified streets in the AIA Architecture Guide to St. Louis.
