The City of Chicago, it is the most populous city in the state of Illinois and the Midwest. With over 2.7 million residents, Chicago is stated to be the third most populous city in the United States. The Chicago metropolitan area often referred to as Chicagoland, has nearly 10 million people and is the third-largest in the U.S. Chicago covers an area of 60,000 hectares and sits 176 meters (578 feet) above sea level on the south-western shore of Lake Michigan. At 190 km wide and 495 km long, it’s the 5th largest body of fresh water in the world. Chicago is traversed by the Chicago and Calumet rivers. Chicago’s extensive parklands, including 3,000 hectares of city parks attract an estimated 86 million visitors annually.

The first known reference to the site of the current city of Chicago as “Checagou” was by Robert de LaSalle around 1679 in a memoir. Henri Joutel, in his journal of 1688, noted that the wild garlic, called “chicagoua”, grew abundantly in the area. Other sources say place of the skunk. In late 1970’s, Chicago’s first permanent resident was a free black trader man from Haiti named Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. The US government built Fort Dearborn at what is now the corner of Michigan, Avenue and Wacker Drive. In 1812, Chicago was burned to the ground by Native Americans then rebuilt and demolished in 1857.

In 1916, Chicago was described as the “City of the Big Shoulders” by poet Carl Sandburg, and the still carries that up to this day. Chicago’s has many world class museums and cultural attractions alongside thriving commercial and industrial ventures. Even Frank Sinatra was moved by the beauty of Chicago and immortalized Chicago as “My kind of Town. A number of events led to the establishment of the modern-day futures and commodity trading markets, along with Chicago’s transportation systems and geographic proximity to the rest of the country. From places in the Mississippi Valley such as St. Louis, Missouri, Massive amounts of goods passed through Chicago. Grain was stored in Chicago, and people began buying contracts on it. Later, people as far away as New York City began buying contracts by telegraph on the goods that would be stored in Chicago city in the future. From this, Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), and the modern systems in use today for futures and commodity.

There are plenty of attractions that travellers might be interested to visit in Chicago. One of which is the Navy Pier, truly a city within the city. Millennium Park is where hundreds of free concerts and performances are held. Sky Deck is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere beckons with its eye-popping views of Chicago and beyond. Aside from the three attractions mentioned, there are still more of them that Chicago can offer. One of that is the food. Chicago lays claim to a large number of regional specialties that reflect Chicago’s ethnic and working-class roots. Included among these are its nationally renowned deep-dish pizza; this style is said to have originated at Pizzeria Uno. The Chicago-style thin crust is also popular in the city.
