Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in the U.S. coastal state of South Carolina. Charleston proper consists of six distinct areas: the Peninsula/Downtown, West Ashley, Johns Island, James Island, Daniel Island, and the Cainhoy Peninsula. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 127.5 square miles (330.2 km2), of which 109.0 square miles (282.2 km2) is land and 18.5 square miles (47.9 km2) is covered by water. Much of Charleston is sandy and the coast plain is very flat and has the vegetation characteristic of coarse soil. Further inland, there is sand; dunes from what used to be the coast millions of years ago rise up in the middle of the state. Forests and fields are ample, and a small corner of the region contains peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Animals and other wildlife includes: birds such as Carolina wren and wild turkey, the White-tailed deer, Loggerhead sea turtle, spotted salamander, Striped bass fish and Carolina mantis. The Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area consists of three counties: Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester.
