Once an agricultural village, Cambridge is now a thriving metropolis throbbing with diversity. Cambridge is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in the metropolitan area of Boston. Cambridge received its name in honor of the University of Cambridge which is in the United Kingdom, and was considered an important center of the Puritan theology lauded by the town’s founders. Cambridge is home to two of the most prominent universities in the world, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As of the year 2010 Cambridge’s population was 105,162. In July of 2014 Cambridge was declared the fifth most populous city in the state.
Although two of America’s most notable universities reside there, contributing in large part to its reputation for intellectualism, Cambridge is in reality, an eclectic mix of history, learning, art and culture. You have historical areas for sightseeing, cafes and shops where students go to hang-out, vintage clothing stores, plenty of book stores and a wide variety of restaurants. Located right across the Charles River from Boston, Cambridge has a unique style that one can’t help but see at once. There’s Harvard Square, a center of activity like no other, with fashionable stores, outdoor cafes and many eccentric local characters. Here you can go to the visitors information booth in the center of the Square where you can get a walking tour map.
The route will lead you past many important landmarks including the Mount Auburn Cemetery, the Longfellow National Historic Site, and Tory Row. Also, there’s Harvard University which provides student-led tours through the illustrious buildings and monuments of its large campus. If you happen to be a fan of art and architecture then you should linger at the M.I.T. campus, which has fascinating outdoor sculptures by the great masters like Picasso and 20th-century buildings created by modern greats like Eero Saarinen and I. M. Pei. While you’re roaming about, take the time to stop and browse through some of the ample bookstores, and have a cup of coffee or other beverage at an outdoor cafe so you can sit back and watch the street performers and absorb all this fascinating city, Cambridge, has to offer.
One of the top restaurants in Cambridge is Oleana, located on Hampshire Street. This place is truly fabulous with delicious modern twists on traditional Turkish food. The food is so good that’s it’s hard to recommend one thing, as you’ll be busy sampling a little of everything. However out of the Meze plates the Tuna Kibbeh Nayeh and the Nettle Borek were particularly good. The desserts are also great. High quality food and excellent service. The Border Cafe is a long time Cambridge restaurant which has only improved over the years. Located on Church Street, this is the place to go for great food and great prices. The filet mignon Jim Bowie style is worth a try, and the fresh chips and salsa are superb. The black beans and rice is also good as are the fajitas. The service is wonderful and the atmosphere is all about the present.
