Beaumont, Big Money Texas or BMT, is a city in Texas, United States, within Beaumont-Port Arthur Metro Area, geographically located on the west bank of Neches River in the South-Eastern part of Texas. The City is within the humid subtropical climate zone and receives the most rainfall in the state. According to the 2010 census, Beaumont has 118,296 people (48.7% are male and 51.3% are female), 45,648 households, and 28, 859 families. The city is home for different races, where 46.9% of its total population are African American, 34.7% are White, 13.4% Hispanic or Latino, and 5% other races including American Indian, Asian and some other races.
For a brief history of Beaumont, in 1824, Noah and Nancy Tevis settled and organized a farm on the west bank of Neches River where a small community grew and later called Tevis Bluff or Neches River Settlement. Many years after, the land was bought by Northerners, planning to lay out a town on this land. Beaumont officially became a town in 1838, named after Jefferson Beaumont, a brother-in-law of one of the Northerners. Thereafter, different businesses bloomed including farming, real estate, transportation services, and retail sales. As an active port, Beaumont became a successful shipping center and later a prime lumber and rice-milling town. Along with this success, oil had also been discovered in the Spindletop Hill and became the new home of several oil companies.
Today, Beaumont’s economy continues to prosper as the number of businesses, housing, and school constructions boomed in the city. According to their Comprehensive Annual Financial Report in 2014, the top businesses in Beaumont are as follows: Conn’s Appliances Inc., Beaumont Independent School District, ExxonMobil Corporation, ENGlobal Corporation, and Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital. As for Education, Beaumont has one state university, Lamar University, a national Carnegie Doctoral Research University, which offers more than 100 courses and caters more than 15,000 students. They also have Lamar Institute of Technology, which serves as a technical college for 2-year courses.
