Albany, New York

Albany, the Cradle of The Union and county seat of Albany County, is the state capital of New York, U.S. Geographically located on the west bank of Hudson River and south of its junction with Mohawk River. The City of Albany bordered by the towns Colonie, Guilderland, and Bethlehem. It is situated within the humid continental climate zone, with cold and snowy winters, and hot and wet summers. According to the 2010 census, Albany has a total population of 97,856 (48.4% are male and 51.6% are female), 41,157 households, 17,848 families. The city is home for different races, where 54% of the population is White, 29.1% African American, 8.6% Hispanic or Latino, and 8.3% from other races including Asian, American Indian, and some other races.

For a brief history of the city, the first inhabitants of Albany were the Mohican on the Hudson River and the Mohawk on the Mohawk River. They became the fur-trading partners with the Dutch and English and the area was called Beverwyck (Beaver District). When the Netherland was captured by the English, the name was then changed to the present day Albany. The city’s name was derived from the Duke of York’s Scottish title, Duke of Albany. Thereafter, real estate transactions greatly increased and migrants from Vermont and Connecticut came to reside in Hudson and do business in Albany. In 1800s, the city became the center of transportation and later as the turnpike center of the state. A steamboat enterprise became successful travelling in and out of Albany from New York. Having two major railroad headquarters, the railroad industry also made a great contribution to the great development of the city.
From thereon, other major business structures were built such as, Empire State Plaza, W.Averell State Building Campus, and SUNY Albany’s Uptown Campus.

Albany’s economy continues to prosper up to present day through the government, education and healthcare sectors. Here are just some of the biggest employers: Albany Medical Center Hospital, Bechtel Propulsion Corp., Ellis Hospital, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute., and Walmart. In the late 1900s, Albany and other Capital Districts redirected their focus towards high technology. Technology has grown since then and many major manufacturers – Silicon Valley, Boston, IBM, etc – prospered in the industry. Significant breakthroughs had also been seen with the development of nanotechnology, digital electronics, and water and electricity-dependent microchips. Aside from these successes in the business venture, Albany also has a prominent history in education; In fact, the city was ranked third by Forbes in a 2005 survey for best education.

Access to the city can be in different ways – air, river, or land – since Albany has the center for transportation. When in the Albany, major attractions awaits the visitor, here are just a few: New York State Museum, Washington Park, The Egg, Albany Pine Bush Preserve, Governor Rockefeller Empire State Plaza, and Albany Institute of History and Art. They also host annual events such as the Tulip Festival, Riverfront Jazz Festival, Fourth of July celebration, and the like. Local foods also await food lovers like, The Doughboy, Mini Hotdogs, The Peppermint Pig, Sturgeon (Albany Beef), and Mozzarella Sticks with Raspberry Sauce.
